Even Dysfunctional Families Had Castles

On the Rhine River, staying in an old castle is a must. Not an old castle with a new hotel stuck onto the side of it, but staying in the actual old castle's original rooms.
I stayed at the only castle on the Rhine with another castle next to it. Normally, the castles dotted the river's curves and bends, to provide the castle's inhabitants proper vantage points for approaching ships. But this bend in the river had two castles that were a stone's throw from each other. A more accurate description would be an "arrow's flight" from each other.
The story went as follows: The two castles were inhabited by one single family. It was a family of 3 children and the parent. When the parent died, the three children were splitting up the gold wealth. One of the children—the daughter—was blind, and her evil brother tried to give her a smaller share by replacing the gold with rocks. The other brother, the "good brother," found this reprehensible and vowed to right this wrong.
The two brothers lived in the two castles, and had decided to put this family squabble behind them and the good brother forgave the evil brother. To commemorate the two brothers' renewed bond of family and friendship, the two brothers agreed to open their window shutters at the same time one day and proclaim that everything was fine between them. However, when the good brother opened his window shutter he was met with an arrow to the head shot by his evil sibling.
Even knowing that story, I was able to sleep soundly in the castle's master bedroom with those shutters open all night.
