Things to Consider When Planning a Trip

When planning a trip, there are many things to consider and many questions to ask yourself (or your group) before you can start booking and planning your itinerary. Here are some items to think about to guide you in the right direction.

Where to Go

Do you want to visit a city? Do you need some free time on a remote beach? Is a hike in the mountains what you're looking for?

Where to Stay

Do you want the five-star hotel experience full of amenities, or do you prefer small, intimate accommodations? Do you want to stay in the heart of the city, or want to have a more relaxed atmosphere in the outskirts or countryside?

Types of Activities

Are you a nonstop sightseer? Do you enjoy relaxing on a beach? Do you like the no-planning-necessary experience of organized tours, or do you want to call your own shots and make your own itinerary? Will you visit museums, go on eating excursions, or rent a bike to explore parts of the city or country?

New Place or Return

Do you want to see a new place? Do you want to return to somewhere you've already been to either spend more time there, or experience it with someone new? Do you want to "check off" as many cities and countries as you can, or do you want enough time in one place to feel immersed?

Time of Year

What time of year do you want to travel? Do you want it to be warm or cold when you reach your destination? Do certain events that you want to attend only happen during particular times of the year? Does your job require you to take vacation and travel during certain months?

Budget

How much do you want to spend on your trip? Should you sacrifice certain things in your itinerary for others, to ensure you can still stay on your budget? Is the country you're going to relatively more expensive or less expensive than back home?

Solo or Group

Do you want to travel alone, with people you know, or with a group of strangers as part of an organized tour? How well do you know your travel companions (if at all)? How similar or dissimilar are you when it comes to traveling?
